How to Register
in SAM.gov

A screen-by-screen walkthrough of the federal entity registration that opens every contract opportunity.

FIRST, THE STAKES

No SAM.gov registration
= no federal contract. Period.

REQUIRED FOR

Every federal contract award

Prime contracts, subcontract flow-downs, grants, cooperative agreements, and most agency assistance programs.

TIMELINE

7–14 days typical

10 business days for IRS validation. Add 3–7 days if there are name, address, or TIN mismatches. Plan for 4 weeks to be safe.

PREREQUISITES

Gather these four things first.

01

Legal business information

Exact legal entity name, physical address, EIN/TIN, and date of incorporation — must match IRS records exactly.

02

NAICS code(s)

Your primary NAICS plus 3–5 secondary codes. These determine which solicitations you see.

03

Banking + payment info

Bank account and routing number for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is how the government pays you.

04

Points of contact

Names, titles, and emails for Electronic Business POC, Government Business POC, and Past Performance POC.

STEP 1

Create a Login.gov account.

secure.login.gov
Create your account
Login.gov is the single sign-on for SAM.gov and many other federal services.
Two-factor authentication (required)
Authentication app · SMS · Security key · Backup codes
PRO TIP
Use a company email, not a personal one.
If the registrant leaves your organization, you'll want this account tied to a role-based mailbox like contracts@yourcompany.com — not someone's personal Gmail. Two-factor is required; an authenticator app is the most reliable option.
STEP 2

Start your entity registration.

sam.gov
HomeSearchWorkspaceHelp
Workspace › Entity Management
Get Started: Entity Registration
You'll register your entity and receive a Unique Entity ID (UEI) and CAGE code.
Purpose of registration
Entity type
CHOOSE WISELY
Pick "All Awards."
Even if you only intend to pursue contracts today, "All Awards" keeps grants and cooperative agreements open as future paths. You can't easily change this later without re-registering.
STEP 3

Enter your core business data.

CRITICAL
Match the IRS exactly.
SAM validates your TIN and legal name against IRS records. If there's any mismatch — a missing comma, "LLC" vs "L.L.C." — registration stalls for weeks. Pull your IRS CP-575 letter and copy character-for-character.
STEP 4

Assertions: NAICS, EFT, and exclusions.

NAICS Codes
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
NAICS STRATEGY
List every code you can defend.
Agencies filter solicitations by NAICS. List your primary as the code that generates the most revenue, then add every secondary code that legitimately describes your work. Missing a relevant code = invisible to relevant solicitations.
STEP 5

Reps & Certs — read carefully.

sam.gov
HomeSearchWorkspaceHelp
Entity Registration › Representations & Certifications
FAR & DFARS Reps and Certs
Updated March 24, 2026 — modernized framework. Verify against the new structure.
FAR 52.204-26 — Covered Telecommunications
☑ The Offeror represents that it does not provide covered telecommunications equipment or services to the Government in the performance of this contract.
FAR 52.219-1 — Small Business Program Representations
☑ Small Business Concern · ☐ Woman-Owned · ☐ HUBZone · ☐ SDVOSB · ☐ 8(a)
FAR 52.222-22 — Previous Contracts and Compliance
☐ Has not previously been awarded a federal contract subject to EO 11246.
DON'T SKIM
Every cert is signed under penalty of perjury.
There are 30+ representations. Read each one — wrong answers can be a False Claims Act issue. If you're unsure (e.g., Section 889 covered telecom, OCIs), pause and consult counsel before submitting.
STEP 6

Designate your points of contact.

sam.gov
HomeSearchWorkspaceHelp
Entity Registration › Points of Contact
Points of Contact
Electronic Business POC (required)
Government Business POC (required)
Past Performance POC
USE ROLE EMAILS
Not personal mailboxes.
POC emails receive every contracting-officer inquiry, CPARS notification, and award document. Tie them to a role-based mailbox monitored by more than one person.
STEP 7

Submit — then wait for validation.

1
Submit registration
2
IRS TIN validation
~10 business days
3
CAGE code assignment
~3 business days
4
SAM.gov final review
5
Status: Active
WATCH YOUR EMAIL
Two notifications signal completion.
You'll receive (1) a CAGE code confirmation from DLA and (2) a registration-active confirmation from SAM.gov. If either is missing after 14 days, log in and check the registration status page for hold-up reasons.
AVOID THESE

Three pitfalls that delay 80% of registrations.

PITFALL #1

Name & TIN mismatch

"Acme LLC" vs "Acme, LLC." One comma triggers an IRS validation failure and an extra 7–14 days. Always copy from your CP-575 letter.

PITFALL #2

Wrong physical address

A PO Box won't work — SAM requires a physical address. The address must match what you have on file with the IRS.

PITFALL #3

Forgetting annual renewal

SAM expires every 365 days. Expired registrations make you invisible to agencies overnight. Calendar the renewal 60 days before expiry.

AFTER ACTIVATION

Your first three actions.

ACTION 1

Save your UEI & CAGE

Store these in your capability statement, proposal templates, invoicing system, and CRM. They're cited on every federal document going forward.

ACTION 2

Verify DSBS profile

Your Dynamic Small Business Search profile is auto-populated from SAM. Log in, complete the optional fields, and add a capability narrative.

ACTION 3

Set 365-day renewal calendar

Add a calendar reminder for 60 days before expiry. Block 2 hours to re-review Reps & Certs against any updates.

ACTION 4

Start tracking opportunities

With your UEI active, you can save searches in SAM.gov for your NAICS codes and start receiving relevant solicitation alerts.
